Tips for Cleaning Your Aluminium Windows

Aluminium windows are a great option for those who wish to make a statement. They can make a modern home look even better while the tough, durable design ensures they last a lifetime.

However, they do require occasional maintenance to keep them looking in tip-top condition. As it’s a metal, aluminium needs a different approach to cleaning when compared to other materials

Read our quick guide on how to keep your aluminium windows as good as the day you bought them.

How to clean aluminium windows

Powder-Coated Windows

Do you have powder-coated aluminium windows? Congratulations! They need very little maintenance. However, if you live in an area of high emissions (e.g. near a road) or by the coast, you should clean your windows at least once every three months. Otherwise every six months is fine.

  • When it is time for a clean, make sure you use a soft micro-fibre cloth and soapy water to get rid of the grime. You can get special window frame cleaner but a household detergent from most supermarkets is fine.
  • Using harsher cleaning products may damage the finish of your window frame.
  • Don’t forget to wash out all grooves, joints and ridges where dirt can collect. This will prevent corrosion.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water then dry with a soft cloth or chamois leather.
  • Consider applying a wax once a year for maximum protection and shine.

Older Aluminium Windows

These take a bit more work than powder-coated windows. You can still follow the advice above (soapy water, micro-fibre cloth) but consider taking a few extra steps.

  • Think about applying a special wax to your aluminium frames once a year for protection against the elements.
  • You may also need to use a renovating polish to help restore shine or get rid of chalking. Whatever products you use make sure they are non-abrasive and specifically made for aluminium windows.

General Window Care

Frames are only part of the problem though. Here are some tips to keep your glass panes sparkling:

  • Dust the sills first. Essential if you want to avoid a muddy mess at the bottom of your windows.
  • Clean on a cloudy day. The sun tends to dry out your windows and leave marks.
  • Use a squeegee. There’s a reason why professional window cleaners don’t use anything else. The soft, sponge types are great for general cleaning while a rubber squeegee will remove those annoying streaks.
  • Try newspaper. Experts think a scrunched-up newspaper is more effective than a paper towel for cleaning. Combine with an eco-friendly cleaner to keep your windows looking great.
  • Open your windows regularly. Even for 10 minutes will help the air to circulate and prevent condensation.
